About Us

History of The Casella Group

Cesare Tagliabue established the original company in Holborn, London in 1799 during the reign of King George III. Within just a few years Louis Pascal Casella joined Cesare in a partnership and the new Casella name was born. In the early years the product ranges being exported around the world included exploration, navigation, photographic, meteorological and medical research instruments. Our early customers included Charles Darwin and Dr. Livingstone who used many of the early Casella products on their travels of discovery.

Casella in the 19th Century

During the 19th century, the product range continued to grow and Casella exhibited instruments including theodolites and surveying equipment at the first 'Great Exhibition' held in the Crystal Palace, Hyde Park London in 1851.

An example of a Casella  "Travellers' Transit Theodolite" field unit is shown here. This was used by the British Admiralty and the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey in the 1880's. Further details may be found at this link to the Smithsonian Museum.

In the late 1890's Casella were also manufacturing theodolites under license from John Bridges-Lee and were  supplying them to the US Geological Survey group. Examples of these theodolites can be seen in the Smithsonian National Museum Home Page. The theodolite shown here was still being manufactured by the Casella Company in England and used around the world through into the 1930's.

Casella in the 20th Century

As the two great World Wars of the last century raged, our expertise in optics, compasses and photogrammetry equipment was put to good use by the military. By the 1950's Casella had designed and built a significant amount of dust monitoring equipment for the deep mining industry, including a number of industry standard products.

Casella in the 21st century

In 2006 Casella Measurement including Casella USA was purchased by Ideal Industries of Illinois from the previous holding company. Situated in Sycamore, IL Ideal manufacture a wide range of quality products for the electrical market. The long term strategy is to continue the growth of Casella Measurement as a provider of high quality instruments for the industrial and environmental markets around the world. The first new product to arrive following the purchase is the exciting all new CEL-350 Micro Noise Dosimeter. A small, lightweight badge style noise dosimeter with many of the features of the earlier generation of dosimeters but in a much smaller package making it "ideal" for the busy industrial hygienist.

CEL HISTORY

CEL Instruments have been manufacturing high quality instrumentation for the measurement of noise and vibration since the early 1970's. In 1998, Casella acquired CEL Instruments, manufacturers of innovative noise monitoring equipment. The natural synergy formed from this integration allows the combined new company, Casella CEL, to offer a broader and more comprehensive product range to both the occupational and environmental market sectors.
